Well that's just Reagan vs Carter all over again. Iran knew Carter wouldn't bomb them if they didn't release the hostages. Reagan pretty much promised to. Iran released the hostages the moment Reagan was elected.

From most of the accounts of the Iran hostage crisis that I have read, it always seemed fairly clear that Carter did all of the negotiations to free the hostages, and Iran only waited until Reagan took office before releasing them to spite Carter for his support of the Shah. Unrelated events also put pressure on Iran to end the standoff, such as the USSR invading their neighbor Afghanistan and being invaded themselves by Iraq. That last part was probably the biggest driver for an end to the crisis, as Iran was fielding primarily American military hardware and hoped that by releasing the hostages they could secure parts and supplies to keep their military going.

If you want to pay for that go ahead, although most companies are more than happy to use their already overworked and underpaid staff, possibly add in a few contractors, and have (mostly) working software slightly after the due date (which nobody believed in the first place) that meets the business needs for 1/10th or less of the cost. Also, I don't know where you have been working, but IT is far from the only department running poorly in most companies I have seen. TL;DR version: most companies are not flying in space.

First 'Malaria-Proof' Mosquito Created 261

Gisg writes "The University of Arizona team reported that their genetically modified mosquitoes are immune to the malaria-causing parasite, a single-cell organism called Plasmodium. Riehle and his colleagues tested their genetically-altered mosquitoes by feeding them malaria-infested blood. Not even one mosquito became infected with the malaria parasite."

There were a lot of problems in the early 5.x releases, which led to a lot of criticizm from everyone who was used to the rock solid 4.x versions. If you browse through the release engineering section on the FreeBSD website http://www.freebsd.org/releng/index.html, you will find some articles discussing changes to the release engineering process that occured in response to the problems experienced during 5.x.
