Comment Premiering actual apps, not web wrappers (Score 1) 28

All those AI apps that's listed in TFA are glorifies web wrappers, not utilizing anything particularly tied to any of Apple's platforms and their innovation has absolutely nothing with anything Apple's brought to the table so it's just natural that they don't give any prices to them. If they'd leveraged Apples AI/ML features in any way, then they'd be eligible for an Apple award, but I don't think they have.

While the bandwidth is impressive, this general tech is old. Using lasers to do high speed networking must be 30 years old at least. Here in Gothenburg, the largest newspaper Göteborgs-Posten had a laser link to where they printed the newspapers doing 10 Mbps in the middle of 1990s at a distance of ca 2 km. Three years ago my company was offered a laser backup to our fiber connection. That link was at least 1 Gbps. And that wouldn't cost us much either.

Cool! I have never even considered this. Thanks for pointing me to a very scary part of Computer Science :) However.. Regarding OpenPOWER systems, since the all levels of software is open, and the ISA is open, you can (given an insane level of CS proficiency) probably (or at least much more likely compared the competition) write software to validate that what you are actually running is what you intend to be running. And have a fairly high degree of probability to find out if the silicon's doping is compromised. And given an insane amount of money, you can purchase a license of the CPUs from IBM and fab your own, even change them if you like (and can). A Chinese company (Suzhou C*Core Technology Co or China-Core for short) did this with POWER8 and replaced security macros in the CPU since they wanted Chinese IP there instead of American. The resulting POWER8 processor is called CP1, and is functionally identical to IBM's.

Is there any computer that's open source and libra from the ground up? Including boot firmware, power management and tuning in the CPU etc? If you're truly concerned about privacy and security you can't do any x86 or Arm based computer because there are no computer that will expose all the nooks and crannies for hardening or validation. But there are such computers. Raptor Computing https://www.raptorcs.com/ are offering several POWER based models where every software part is open source, and even much of the hardware, even the instruction set for the CPU. So.. how many will put their money where their mouth is?

I hope you don't hinder the efforts of others.

I'm not sure that a emulator like they had the previous two transitions is needed this time. The software stack is much more prepared this time. The long tail of abandoned, legacy applications is already shed, and everything running in current macOS is built on a toolchain with excellent ARM support, including the majority of open source products. Applications in the Mac App Store is at worst a recompile away, and many can be recompiled by Apple in the store itself. Everything on iOS/iPadOS is already 100% ARM based, and everything passing through Xcode will recompile just fine to ARM. Mostly everything Microsoft does is on a toolchain supporting ARM, due to its own platforms, but also Android and iOS. The only thing I worry about are those depending on using x86/Windows. All formalized organizations and corporations has a very similar code too, and all this is very public and must be so for it to be useful.
