Comment We are so fucked (Score 0) 98

Beachfront homes washing away? I don't live near the beach. Fuck them.
Many airports are just above sea level. Refineries. Ports. All those things that actually do affect you.

Bananas varieties going extinct? I don't even like bananas. Fuck them.
Except that beef yields are down, rice is getting more arsenic, and a host of other problems facing our food supplies. It's even worse in the Middle East, where wars break out because of droughts. China, Pakistan, and India are fighting over water too: three nuclear nations.

Forest fires in California? Fuck Commiefornia.
Except that climate change is already costing the US alone hundreds of billions, thanks to fires and storms across most of the country.

Hence, we are so fucked.

This is reverberating through the economy.

Relatively speaking, people aren't buying. People aren't signing up for services. People aren't vacationing. People aren't buying homes.

Then we have the tariffs causing inflation and disruptions in the supply chain.

Few want to invest in America or anywhere else right now. Oh sure, the Saudis and UAE say they'll invest, but mainly they're just bribing Trump. Money will go to his family, but little of it will hit the US economy, just like their promised money for Palestinians.

Comment Buildings abandoned in Hawaii (Score 3, Informative) 145

Several condo buildings have had to be abandoned and knocked down in Hawaii. They're ocean front properties, and higher tides inundated the bottom floors. They're complexes that did just fine for many decades.

Ocean rise is going to accelerate as more CO2 and methane enter the atmosphere as thawing permafrost reveals ancient biomass, and as more heat gets absorbed from ocean revealed by melted ice.

We are so fucked.

Comment I use DDG and Google and even, sometimes, LLM (Score 1) 62

Much of the time, DDG searches are noticeably worse than Google. On the phone, I default to DDG. On the PC, to Google. If I can't find it with DDG, I can usually find it with Google. That's maybe one out of 20 searches. If I cannot find it with Google, which is maybe 1/40 searches, I will try with an LLM. The LLM often points me in a direction that allows a later Google search to find what I want. I never trust what an LLM says, though. It's wrong such a huge portion of the time, be it GPT or Gemini or whatever the fuck the Microsoft one is called. Clippy?
