Comment This could do some damage... (Score 5, Insightful) 98

So... when I got my new cell phone number a few years ago, somebody else had that number before me. I would frequently get automated text messages about overdraft warnings on some bank account. I would get frequent text messages and automated voicemails from some local school telling me a child had been marked absent (obviously not one of my kids' schools). What would scare me is if realtors would refuse to work with me because my phone number may also be linked to someone else who had that number before me. That seems very unfair.

Yet the starship actually did disintegrate... it came apart while well into the atmosphere... word is it sprayed the ocean with a debris field. It did NOT come down intact. Doesn't matter whether it's a wing, flap, spoiler, or a buttplug, the whole thing came apart and if humans were on board, they'd all be dead now. Go ahead, your definition of success doesn't match mine.

First of all, I'm a pilot. I know what a wing is. I don't give a crap whether you want to call it a wing or flap. Makes no real difference. I'm relatively certain that I know more about aerodynamics than you do. (I haven't mentioned what my education is). Sorry, I must have missed it... which Starship launch in the last 14 months ocurred where the Starship didn't blow up or disintegrate during reentry? Please point to which one that was. I'll wait.

According to what I've read, it came apart and disintegrated long before it reached water. I'm talking about Starship, not the booster. The booster had a controlled landing in water. The Starship actually disintegrated. Video was eventually lost, but some telemetry was still being provided and was indicative of the component fluttering to the ground. It came apart. Even if it didn't come apart, because of the holes in the ACTUAL starship, the heat and gases would have killed everyone on board even if they were in suits. You don't want holes in your spaceship when entering the atmosphere. The metal was actually melting and on fire.

Actually, the US government gave $2.8 billion to SpaceX in 2023 alone. They've given over $15.8 billion since 2003. So... a LOT more. And you can bet your bottle dollar that each year we will be giving billions more. So you think taxpayers are only paying for 10% of the cost? Bless you for thinking that. The reality however, is very different.

Comment Re:It just makes no sense (Score 0, Flamebait) 305

First SpaceX has to build a Starship that doesn't disintegrate during reentry. So far they have NOT been successful. The one they launched last week would have killed everyone on board. The port wing burned through, the hull burned through in numerous places, tiles were flying off... everybody would have been dead. Also... if I'm not mistaken... SpaceX is largely funded by US tax dollars... they got $2.8 billion in US tax dollars last year, about $15.3 billion in US tax dollars since 2003.

Reusable? LOL. They are far from reusable. The one they tested just a few days ago had heat shield tiles blowing off it during reentry, the port wing burned halfway through before the entire thing disintegrated. You could see on the live stream that the bare metal was burning all the way through the spaceship in numerous places. This thing is a joke. And just remember, US tax dollars are largely funding this sham.

And of course HP is literally the source of almost all printer hatred these days. I mean, no joke... they are deserve all of the hatred directed towards them. They have literally turned their printers into inefficient, DRM-locked in garbage, responsible for millions of metric tons of e-waste with their customer-unfriendly practices with their printers. I warn everybody I know to stay far, far away from HP printers. You are literally shooting yourself in both feet with an HP printer purchase. I do not wish that on anyone. Utter and complete garbage. I guess HP needs to figure out how to be customer friendly. Doubt they will ever figure that out again. They have been going down the tubes for decades now, willing to screw customers in any way possible in order to make some sort of profit. Do you research, and find out why you should stay away from HP.

Comment Uber's pricing has always been shady to me... (Score 5, Informative) 76

I had to travel on business to AWS headquarters in Seattle about 5 years ago. Around 10:30am on a weekday, I checked what it would cost for an Uber to the airport (not very far away). The price was going to be something like $30. I didn't hit the submit button yet because I wasn't ready to leave yet. About 15 minutes later, I added my corporate AMEX card on my Uber card, and suddenly the price for the same trip jumped to $140 or something crazy like that, and I was notified it was due to the so called "surge pricing". I believe the price jumped as soon as a corporate AMEX card was added, and not because of any real surge. There was not a lot of traffic around. I ultimately did NOT order the car because I felt like that was just plain stupid. And this wasn't Uber Black or anything like that. I closed the app, walked outside, waited about a minute or so to hail a taxi, which then drove me to the airport for around $12. TWELVE DOLLARS. Uber wanted $140. True story.
