Well, in my case, as a computer nerd, Ohio State was still my natural first candidate. Oregon State doesn't even show up on the first page of search results when I search for "OSU". Regardless, I never would have associated Oregon State with anything spectacular as far as computers goes. And this isn't to put the university down in any way, but I actually don't associate Oregon State with anything spectacular, other than it exists.

What you say is 100% correct. Now with that out of the way, do you feel comfortable with your signature on the document saying the emulators won’t crash any trains? Liability is what this comes down to.

Who says the hardware from their running from the 90s even has USB ports? I'd encountered them previously on a Sun, but I'd never seen the ports previously nor anything that could connect to them. They weren't very common until the late 90s. If I recall right, Mac started the trend in the consumer world with the iMac. It beat Windows to a degree of widespread availability and it wasn't until when Windows 98 came out that you started to generally see USB ports on the hardware and USB devices. I don't know if Win 98 was the first Windows to support USB, just that that is when I started to see hardware for PCs.

I strongly disagree. COBOL is still used all over the place on somewhat newer hardware on an OS that few people know. The benefit? How many people know how to hack into such a system. Replace the system with a Java/C#/etc. system and watch that level of security drop fast.

I'm not sure where you get this from. I rarely see "Made in USA" on anything anymore. Even still, when things are made here, as far as automation goes, take a look at the parking lot for the BMW plant in Spartanburg, SC on Google Maps and tell me why there are so many parking spots for a highly automated car manufacturing plant. People are still needed. There's a lot of detailed work that robots simply can't do. There's also the fact that somebody has to fix and maintain the robotic machines.

Perhaps, but it also re-enforces the idea that initially we need trips to Mars to be one-way. We don't know what's there as far as life and how it will impact the astronauts who go there. Things as minute as blood types could be impactful, as can certain genes. Given the length of a voyage just to get to Mars, the necessary tech to provide a continuous food and water source should already have been figured out by then. Just like many of the early space missions, redundant missions should also be utilized to ensure refreshed supplies make it there.

One possible reason that things aren't going according to plan is that there never was a plan in the first place.
