Comment Ireland hit peak booze years ago (Score 2) 181

80's/90s - Lots of people drinking in pubs all day, even during the week. Mostly old guys. Young lads also big into getting drunk at the weekends

2000-2010 - Celtic tiger, everybody drinking at the weekend although many of the old weekday drinkers from the 80s and 90's were dying off. Smoking ban puts a damper on things briefly in 2006, however cocaine comes in to pick up the slack

2010-2020 - Large-scale post-recession disappearance of many rural pubs, nightclubs that thrived during the Tiger shut down due to low demand and high insurance. Weekday drinking declines bigly. 2020-present - Further decline in rural pubs and nightclubs due to post-covid lack of interest in socalising, much higher prices and low availability of staff

Comment Be careful with bumble's lifetime subscription (Score 1, Redundant) 25

I must admit I haven't tried it but these apps are known to prioritise users based on whether they have paid or not. They have little incentive to show matches to someone who has paid a lifetime subscription, they are not going to pay any more money regardless of how well or how poorly they are treated. The only time they might help out someone who paid the lifetime subscription is if they have scanned that person's phone contacts and they are very well connected

Comment Bambu are so far ahead (Score 2, Insightful) 47

They are so far ahead of the competition that they have built up a "head of steam" that they can eat into in order to implement enshittification (DRM, Vendor lock in) and people will still buy their products.

You need huge market share, vast technological superiority or a well sewn-up cartel in order to be able to pull these things off. If Bambu successfully steamrollers the other manufacturers everything will be cloud, they'll only print from bambu spools and they'll upload every gcode to China to make sure you're not printing anything that insults Xi Jingping & the CCP. Also DRM'ed models will become a thing.

In Europe where I live there arent that many public chargers. Certainly the big rows of 100s of tisla super chargers are unheard of. Most towns have a couple of chargers at best. Most of these will be 22kW and realistically most cars will only charge at 7.4kw from those. They are expensive too, 50-75c/kwh. Most people don't really use public chargers unless they are far from home
