Reminds me of when I broke our website at work. I lined up and tested a production patch, but then just before checking in hand-edited the diff to add an extra null check... ah well, lessons learned.

I was like this too once but when Eclipse tripled my productivity due to the various real-time compilation, code inspection, code browsing, or code refactoring mechanisms built into the IDE, I simply couldn't justify not using it.
That's fascinating, my wife is the same way. In fact she turned me onto HOMM3, but won't touch any other game. As far as I can tell she likes the mechanic of going around the map and picking up glittery things, and also likes the fact that it's basically a computer-managed board game, without the twitch factor.
Point is, the only Chinese creative he could come up with is not from mainland China, and went to college in the United States.
