As one of those poor bastards I can tell you with confidence that it's very easy. We manage approximately 400 physical hosts and deal with relatively few hardware issues. Redundancy and good alerting make dealing with those issues fairly trivial. The other benefit of hosting systems yourself is a properly architected environment can use hardware much longer which helps keep costs down.

with crappy specs and almost no apps, that costs as much as a mid priced Android phone? I've got a better suggestion for potential buyers- Buy a mid priced Android phone and remove all apps you don't want/need? Then you get decent specs for the apps you do want/need. And you can get it from a manufacturer you won't have to worry about going out of business in a year.

Anyone who thinks "renewables" are a better solution than Nuclear, and doesn't understand WHY Nuclear takes TOO LONG and is EXPENSIVE to build has not done their homework anyways. Even IF we concede that climate change/global warming/whatever it's being called this year is real, I'm waiting for some REAL solutions before I buy in on destroying our economy to combat it. Because electric cars, solar/wind energy, and getting rid of plastic bags at the supermarket IS NOT WORKING. And we still aren't building nuclear power plants. Our politicians fly to far off places every year, emitting massive amounts of carbon, to discuss the issue. It's impossible to take seriously under these circumstances and with these people deciding how to fight it.

Call me skeptical but I'm still waiting for a good example of an AI that actually seems intelligent like a human. I worked at a large tech company that paid a crapload of money for someone to develop an AI that was supposed to replace our knowledge base system and streamline support for customers. They went so far as to tell us we had to write KB articles for this system and our review/bonus depended on it. When it went live it was so horrible as to be unusable and within a few weeks all mention of it had disappeared with no mention of it ever again. I am convinced some up and coming executive convinced higher ups that it would be the best thing since sliced bread but when it came out it was less intelligent than a newborn baby. The two "best" "AI's" I've seen or heard of - One is marginally decent at being used as a voice to command interpreter for home automation and telling me about the weather, and the other struggles with getting the complexion correct when asked for pictures of the founding fathers, and has also caused lawyers to be sanctioned by making stuff up that was used in legal briefs. I think ELiZA may still be more "intelligent" than some of the AI startups with many millions in VC funds behind them.

And there may be some truth to that. But I was in SF about a year ago for a conference and went to Walgreens for some toiletry items I had forgotten. At least 50% of the store was behind locked doors, including simple things like razor blades. The PA system was constantly blaring "customer service needed on aisle x" to get these simple items for customers. The 2nd day I was there I passed by the same Walgreens and one of their glass entrance doors was gone, replaced with a big piece of wood. i assume it was busted overnight. I tried to go to Marshalls to get a belt but there was a line halfway down the block because they were limiting how many people could be in the store at the same time. I'm not saying Macy's doesn't have other issues, but to downplay crime as a factor is disingenuous.

So about a year ago I saw a SunRun representative at Costco and had been considering Solar so I signed up for a salesman to come talk to me about it. I gotta tell you. He was good. Had a great presentation and they have great tech, assuming it works as demonstrated/described, that you can log in to a website and see all sorts of data about the energy your panels are generating, etc.....But they wanted an answer NOW, and I'm not a NOW kind of person. After that day I started getting calls from other people at SunRun trying to get me to sign the contract. Why would I want to deal with people I hadn't even developed a relationship with? They literally started calling and leaving voice mail every hour on my home answering machine. That was it. I was done with them. Really soured me on the idea of going solar, at least for now. A long long time ago, in response to the invention of DVR's when they ran ReplayTV out of business, a Hollywood executive famously said that there was an unwritten contract that viewers would watch commercials. Well, the DVR wasn't killed despite all their efforts and in the ensuing 25 years they've added a bunch more commercials per hour as well as actually putting commercials in to the content we're watching. It irks me to no end having to watch a commercial in one window of the screen while watching a basketball player shoot a free throw in the other. The streaming services were NOT a result of people wanting a cheaper alternative to cable services. Otherwise they wouldn't all, other then the OG Netflix, be losing massive amounts of money. They purposely priced their offerings below cost, which is illegal in some industries, to attract customers. And now their prices are rising. Eventually they will cost as much as that cable subscription that cost too much for people. In addition, they've started minimizing new content on those linear TV channels that cable offers to try to force people to their streaming services. I'm sick of their lies. It's not stealing, and they're not losing out on all the money people are paying for pirate sites and/or downloading the content they want to watch. I'm sick of their lies every time they get in to a carriage dispute with a cable/satellite company, and the stupid banners they put across the bottom of their channels while I'm trying to watch a show. For me, call me old school or a fuddy duddy but I don't want to have a bunch of different interfaces and services. I LIKE having a single guide with times that I can just browse through to find what I want to watch or record. I don't want to have to switch services and remember when the shows I want to watch are on and on what service, or deal with multiple DVR's. I have no sympathy. F them.
